Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Border Tuner

November 14 - November 24,2019

"An interactive light and sound installation, featuring three stations on either of side of the border, at the Parque Chamizal in Ciudad Juárez and the parking lots of Bowie High School in El Paso. The stations control 18 of the most powerful searchlight beams in the world. The light beams will be visible from a 10-mile radius. When lights from either of the two sites are directed at each other, powerful bridges of light and sound are created – activating microphones and speakers – allowing participants to communicate with one another and creating a cross-border connection and communication. The first 30 minutes of each evening, Border Tuner will feature themed programming  that features diverse border voices including cumbia, LGBT, migrants, poetry, history, hip-hop, urban art, Feminism, orquestra, Bowie-Chamizal, agriculture, indigenous groups, and environment. The public may participate freely by using the tuning stations from either side of the border to engage in conversations. The public will also be able to participate remotely via SMS voice messages. The world will be able to listen to the conversations being created between the two border cities live at https://bordertuner.net/. Conversations will be archived for future online visitors to enjoy the interaction between both sides of the border."
