December 07 - January 11,2020
"An exhibition of new paintings by Farima Fooladi. Farima’s paintings convey dreams, memories, things once seen, and things that painting foresees. The exhibition opens Saturday, December 7th, 2019, from 5 pm to 8 pm at the gallery, located at 3510 Lake Street at Colquitt in the Upper Kirby Galleries. It runs through January 11th, 2020. An artist’s talk will take place on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at 1 pm. Farima works in layers to emphasize a sense of space and movement in between. She chooses a part of a city, a building, or a corner of a street that she feels like exploring and reimagines it onto her canvas. She addresses displacement, delving into emotional and historical layers of public space and memory. The way social and political changes transform civic spaces is of particular interest to her. Farima’s work includes commentary on imagery, themes, symbols, and stories from Iranian visual culture and literature. Her recent research topic has been collective trauma and its long effect on cultures. She is fascinated by the lasting impact of collective trauma caused by invasion, migration, and displacement. Farima writes, “Diaspora is a piercing theme which is also my own story. It is a challenge when you recall the residue of collective human suffering over one’s own. You realize that the aftermath of international power struggles is coming to your breakfast table.”"
