Andrea Tosten: Martyrdom

March 09 - April 03,2020

https://youtu.be/lDn7nEnxLko Martyrdom is a site specific installation and exhibition of work by Dallas artist Andrea Tosten. After spending hundreds of hours slicing, folding, stitching and shaping paper into altar like forms with flanking tabernacles and cascading banners, the artist brings these components together creating a kind of hallowed space. Combining symbolism and imagery from her Catholic upbringing with cultural heritage and personal story, Tosten transforms the white walled cube into a silent performance by means of reflection, provocation and contemplation. According to Tosten the “installation represents an open exploration of social constructs, how they affect me, and how I can shift and change them”. Andrea Tosten is a calligrapher and a bookbinder. She has been doing calligraphy for over 15 years and teaching it at Oil and Cotton for over seven years. She has been bookbinding at The Book Doctor for over six years. She has a Bachelor of Science in BioMedical Science from Texas A&M University and a Master of Liberal Arts in Museum Studies from the University of Oklahoma.
