Ed Barr: Make Dominant Objects

February 05 - March 27,2021

A solo exhibition featuring work by Ed Barr. From the organizers:

"Floor sculptures and three dimensional wall pieces comprise this selection of recent works.  A pastiche of colors, methods and forms using a wide variety of materials are used to help convey the frenetic quality of today’s postmodern contemporary culture. My objective as a sculptor is to evolve new forms and to make objects that have as their primary quality the ability to attract and hold a viewer’s gaze.  The most effective art has as its primary power that which does not involve the direct intellect.  Formal qualities of the artwork along with conceptual considerations such as cultural commonalities with the viewer are important as they are often the prerequisites in establishing rules of engagement between the artist and the spectator. When you create in the orbit of most people’s lived day to day experiences you have the best chance of creating art that resonates with them. Questions of originality, texture, color, materiality and proportion all come into play in achieving a form that is able to bridge the gap between a viewer’s casual glance and a potentially ecstatic experience.  I believe that art should be beautiful.  Hard to define but you know it when you see it.  Beauty draws you in and keeps you looking after the intellect surrenders.  I think the most compelling aspect of an artistic practice is to make a product that combines critical insights of human conditions with a visceral and unconventional beauty.
