Kingsley Onyeiwu: WANTING

March 27 - May 10,2021

From the gallery:
"Continuing its 2020-2021 season, Hooks-Epstein Galleries proudly presents a solo show for Nigerian-born artist, Kingsley Onyeiwu. WANTING, an exhibition of drawings, will begin on Saturday, March 27, 2021, with the Exhibition Opening from 3:00–5:00P.M.
The artwork of Kingsley Onyeiwu embodies a blend of traditional and contemporary aesthetics. In his latest body of work, WANTING, Onyeiwu delves further into the subject of his figures and explores an array of thoughts channeled through works ranging from fashionable portraiture to evocative abstraction. The use of color in certain pieces serves as a symbol of the changes and feelings that are invoked in relation to the passage of time. Onyeiwu not only explores certain moments and eras throughout the course of history with his pieces, but he also celebrates his cultural background and the narrative of the African diaspora. Echoes of pride, memories, otherworldliness, and confrontation reverberate from the theme of his works.
Kingsley Onyeiwu earned his B.A. from Texas Southern University (TSU), where he was influenced by the works of Dr. John Biggers, Kermit Oliver, and Robert Pruitt. He earned his M.F.A. in Painting from Houston Baptist University (HBU), where he cultivated a deeper understanding of the philosophy around his works, while expounding on ideas beyond the layers of portraiture. Onyeiwu resides in Houston where he currently teaches art at TSU."
