Investigation, Imagination, and Invention

September 01 - September 25,2021

From UTSA:

"Investigation, Imagination, and Invention presents artists whose work is inspired both by narratives of lived experiences and the testimony and by a range of fantasies, dreams, arguments, and provocations that gesture beyond the limitations of past influences. The exhibition features works that advance performative aspects. Jess T. Dugan (Chicago) contributes an autobiographical video, Letter to my Father, that explores estrangement from their father and the tensions of living an authentic life while also desiring the acceptance of others. Sarah Fox (San Antonio) populates her collages and animations with corporeal hybrid creatures that amplifies corporeal female experience in narratives that are suggestive of fairytales and the complexities of the passions that animate personal experience and fantasy. Ellen Mueller (Minneapolis) draws inspiration from the natural environment, hyperactive news media, and corporate management systems to create experiences in digital video and ‘zines that suggest new ways to navigate American life. Marivi Ortiz-Shoda (Chicago) explores virtual social sphere of cam-to-cam online chatting in semi-autobiographical work to discuss the ways people connect, negotiate and communicate. Her work utilizes photography and video to complicate fact and fiction in identity construction and connections with others. Cayla Skillin-Brauchle (Salem, Oregon) works from the assumption that careful reflection can make a different future. Through performance and photography, she encourages others to envision new systems of understanding and questioning.
