MOSTLY RAKU: CERAMICS BY TERRY HAGIWARA

From the Beeville Art Museum: "A selection of approximately 50 ceramic works by Japanese-born, Houston-based artist, Terry Hagiwara, will be on view at the Beeville Art Museum beginning January 22, 2022.  An exhibition opening, free to the public, is scheduled for Saturday, January 22, from noon to 2:00 p.m. Hagiwara grew up in Kyushu, Japan, the third largest island in the country, well-known for its many highly-regarded ceramic centers including Arita, Imari, Nabeshima, Karatsu, Takatori, and Agano. He works with high-fire stoneware, sometime with wood fire, but more often with Raku firing.  His Raku work incorporates a range of glazes, from metallic copper to crackle white, often covered with simple geometric shapes of interlocking patterns. “I find beauty in anything symmetric, but with its symmetry slightly broken, or with a hint of chaos,” stated Hagiwara, describing his approach. Terry Hagiwara’s ceramics have been featured in exhibitions at Houston-area galleries, museums and art spaces including Travis Tower Gallery, Houston; Heritage Plaza Hall, Houston; Asher Gallery, Houston Contemporary Craft Center, Houston; and Glassell School at the The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.  His work has also been included in several articles in Lark Books publications, including “The Best of 500 Ceramics” and “500 Raku.” Stated Tracy Saucier, Director of the Beeville Art Museum, “We’ve been determined to put together a solo show for Mr. Hagiwara since he participated in our earlier group exhibition of clay artists.  We are fans of his work and are so pleased to present this exhibition!” The Beeville Art Museum, created and operated by the Joe Barnhart Foundation, is first and foremost a teaching museum, providing cultural and educational opportunities for the citizens of Bee County and surrounding areas.  Cited by Texas Monthly magazine as one of the “great small towns for art,” Beeville, with a population of approximately 13,000, is home to one of the most ambitious art and educational programs in Texas. In addition to exhibiting works by some of Texas’s most renowned artists, as well as selections from private collections and major museums across the state, the Beeville Art Museum provides docent-led tours and art classes for children and adults and workshops for Beeville educators at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
