Andrea Tosten: GRIFFE
February 12 - March 19,2022
From Cluley Projects:
"Cluley Projects, the new satellite project space of Erin Cluley Gallery, is pleased to present a solo exhibition of works by Dallas based artist Andrea Tosten. The exhibition will be on view February 12th through March 19th at its location in West Dallas at 2123 Sylvan Avenue. An Opening Reception will be hosted for the artist Saturday February 12th from 5-8 pm.
In
GRIFFE, Dallas-based artist Andrea Tosten references her Creole-Jamaican heritage and identity as a Black woman with European and Indigenous roots. The artist uses letterforms, paper, and sewing to “recontextualize and conceptualize my Catholic upbringing, background, and my place in history.”
Tosten explores the history of social constructs through technical mastery. A series of drawings reflect detailed descriptions of the categories of people that result from different combinations of miscegenation. “I am fascinated by the individual words that are used as names for these categories because they point to a strange type of ‘math’.”
The video installation titled,
Griffe, includes a collaboration with musician, Dashon Moore and artist Fabiola Valenzuela. The artist created a series of thaumatropes – an optical toy developed in the early 1800s. Guests are invited to experiment with examples of the thaumatropes presented in the installation.
An artist Meet & Greet is scheduled Saturday February 26th at 4:00pm at Cluley Projects in collaboration with Texas Vignette. Texas Vignette is an organization focused on female and female-identifying artists from Texas. The organization works to promote exceptional yet under-represented regional talent.
