Inward/Outward: Peter Broz and Kevin Lopez

March 19 - April 30,2022

From Box 13 ArtSpace:
"BOX 13 ArtSpace is pleased to present Peter Broz and Kevin Lopez exhibition “Inward/Outward”.
Often, human perceptions of their own reality contrasts with the observable reality. Interpretations of these perceptions, as well, often differ among humans, creating a disconnect between their realities. This selection of paintings and drawings depicts the conversations held between people, themselves, and their environments. Each human experiences the struggle of finding their own identity. Who are they meant to be? What is their truth? The difficulty in finding one’s self is such an enormous and never-ending task. Considering this challenge of finding the self, is it possible to truly identify another person? Kevin’s work speaks to the internal and local interactions of human perceptions as well as the multiplicity and ambiguity within every individual through explorations of the human figure from various positions and perspectives. Which figure is the true self? Are they all? Are there any? Through the use of the human forms intertwined with natural elements as well as man-made objects, Peter’s work looks at the relationship and significance between humans and nature, examining how nature impacts humans on an individual level as well as our impacts on the environment. Inward/Outward explores the latent but meaningful interactions between humans, their worlds, and their own internal identities and sensibilities. Peter Broz aHouston born artist, has been a member of BOX13 since December 2020. Peter discovered his fondness for drawing at a very young age. His childhood art mostly reflected his love of animals in their natural surroundings. In recent years Peter has been creating paintings and drawings that combine his longtime interest in the natural world, they also include the human figure and aspects of the human condition. Peter’s works are primarily 2-dimensional; in a variety of materials such as acrylic, ink, pencil, colored pencil, oil, watercolors and most recently digital art. Peter graduated from the University of Houston with a B.F.A in Studio Painting in 2014. Shortly after graduation Peter received the Juror’s award for the 2014 BIG SHOW at Lawndale. Peter has exhibited his work at several galleries in Houston including The Mariago Collective, Hardy and Nance, The Blaffer Museum and Archway Gallery. After graduating from college, Peter worked as a custom furniture builder for several years. Furniture design and woodworking has been another long-term passion, which is also deeply rooted in a reverence for the beauty of natural materials like wood. Peter then taught high school art in Houston ISD for 4 years. He is also a volunteer for The Woods Project, a local nonprofit wilderness exploration and education program for disadvantaged students in Houston. Always quiet and reserved, he grew up in a large extended family, in a completely uninteresting suburb, and always saw himself as a bit of an outsider. In school, he found comfort in drawing and painting and went on to graduate with a BFA in Art from the University of Houston in 2011. He then worked as a graphic designer for some time but because of Covid-19 and the cultural and social environment of the world during 2020, he decided to pursue fine art. His feelings of isolation during his formative years, as well as during mass isolation in 2020, informs his current work and has influenced his choice to explore ideas of identity and solipsism as it pertains to identity through portraits and depictions of the mundane. Kevin has participated in local group shows and has work in the Carolyn Farb collection. Kevin currently works in his studio at Box13 ArtSpace in Houston, Texas.
