"Claudia Martínez Garay is a multi-media artist that seeks to challenge the persistence of colonialist frameworks and official narratives informing our understanding of Andean cultures. For her Artpace exhibition, Ayataki, the artist has created her second video animation and first surround sound work, which combines hints of familiar stories and socio-political history of Peru during the conflict in the 80s. Garay told Artpace, “I wanted to use the time here at the residency to experiment with sound and it's emotional affecting possibilities.” The sound playing throughout the videohas a significant role in the piece, not only because it is relatively new to Martínez Garay’s practice, but because it plays a large part in building the environment and atmosphere in the animation, transporting the viewer to a multidimensional work. There are elemental sounds, traditional music from the Andes and syncretic melodic elements, radio transmissions, and more."
