ANNA MAVROMATIS: MATERIAL CULTURE

May 07 - September 17,2022

From the Grace Museum:

"Houston-based artist Anna Mavromatis was born in Athens, Greece. She studied architecture at the University of Naples, Italy, holds a BA from London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London, and studied printmaking at the Glassell School of Art, MFA Houston. She is known for artwork that showcases a variety of printmaking techniques, historic and contemporary processes, and traditional surface decoration. She uses textile materials, vintage repurposed surfaces, and reclaimed books. Her studies in architecture and work in fashion design are evident in her creative process and the resulting forms, transformations, and choices of recycled materials.

Mavromatis draws from her knowledge of printmaking, book arts, and fashion design to stich together stories and reflections of her Greek heritage and family history in her installation-based work. Narrated through the colors of her homeland, Mavromatis expresses her emotional connections to photographs and mementos in her personal collection. Raised in Greece and having lived in the UK, Italy and currently the United States, her work reflects a life rich with cultural inspiration. Mavromatis has exhibited throughout the United States and has received many prestigious awards for her work."
