A Transient Nature: Documenting Geological, Atmospheric, and Ecological Transformation

From Georgetown Art Center: "The exhibition is the intersection of three Austin, Texas-based artists’ environmental concerns. Shawn Camp, Shannon Faseler, and Dameon Lester use their individual pursuits to document geological, atmospheric, and ecological transformation. Each artist references frozen moments in time and space to impress upon the viewer the transient attributes of nature. These artworks are based on ephemeral references, incorporating both geological and constructed linear boundaries to affect audience perception. In their travels to experience and understand the significant implications of climate change at a personal level, they, at different times, coincidentally stayed in the same artist residency at Iceland’s Creative Centre of Stöðvarfjörður, further entangling their experiences and artistic output. These shared international experiences and their interconnected local artist community have created a unique opportunity for a very fluid and cohesive show.   About the Artists: Shawn Camp Shawn Camp grew up in Coeur dʼ Alene, Idaho, and completed an MFA in Painting and Printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1997. He then set out exploring, art-making, and exhibiting throughout the United States and abroad as an artist and musician. He settled in Austin, Texas where he is a member of the ICOSA artist collective and teaches at Austin Community College. His works have been shown in the United States and internationally and are included in numerous public and private collections. Shawn’s paintings, videos, and sound pieces exploit the effects of context and light on our perception - contrasting the ephemeral nature of awareness with the illusion of constancy. Shannon Faseler Shannon Faseler is a visual artist who works across media. Born in Texas, she is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin where she received a BFA in Studio art. She also holds an MFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Upon graduating in Chicago, Shannon moved to California where she exhibited, taught, and ran the University Gallery. Currently, Shannon is back in Austin, Texas where she continues her studio practice in addition to teaching, exhibiting, and curating at home and abroad. In her downtime, she enjoys outdoor activities with her husband and Labrador retriever, Star. Dameon Lester Dameon Lester’s art abstractly focuses on our cause and effect with nature. Raised in rural Southwestern Virginia and currently based in Austin, TX, he has lived and traveled to many regions throughout the U.S and abroad to pursue his art education and career. Motivated by his current body of work started in 2014, Dameon has traveled to Alaska and Iceland multiple times on a personal journey to experience and document the effects of climate change first-hand. Apart from his work, these direct experiences generate growing curatorial interest in collaborating with and promoting individual artists. These investigations into other artists and communities affected by climate change are the motivation and inspiration for his study of our self-awareness and connectivity to the planet."
