Currents

July 29 - September 03,2023

From Basket Books & Art:

"Basket Books & Art is pleased to present Currents, an exhibition of work by Ian Gerson, Dani Levine, Virginia L. Montgomery, Kate Mulholland, The Center for Imaginative Cartography and Research (Emily Halbardier and Erik Sultzer), Karen Schiff, and Dan Schmahl. Please join us for an opening reception on Saturday, July 29 from 3-5pm.

Currents speaks of time and energy, as in Heraclitus’s wild and poetic fragments on flow:  ‘We both step and do not step in the same rivers. We are and are not’ (B49a).

Situated across the street from an electrical substation, this exhibition provides a corollary to our neighbor’s constant electric flow. Each type of substation – transmission, distribution, collector, converter – attends to the current, this bit of essential infrastructure animating and facilitating our contemporary condition.

Current: a brief representation of a moment, in circulation, properly animated, lively, resisting stasis, trembling in transmission. Current: the movement of water and air, the force of elements without human intervention, yet always acting on us. The works assembled in this exhibition mediate, respond, and give voice to these currents. "
