Angel Castelán: De Azul Celeste

September 09 - October 14,2023

From Hooks-Epstein Galleries: "Sourcing imagery from his everyday life, the work of Angel Castelán in De Azul Celeste, which translates into “of celestial blue”, explores the interplay between queer experiences, the creation of personal myths, and the beauty found within the mundane. Capturing these quiet moments and ordinary emotions allows Castelán to find authenticity and vulnerability, unconstrained by cultural and societal influences. Through intimate colored pencil drawings and block prints, the pieces in the exhibition allow for not only introspection and catharsis but the humanization of queer life.   Angel Castelán earned his MFA in Painting from the University of Houston (UH) in 2019. He was a Teaching Fellow at UH from Fall 2017 through Spring 2019. This year, Castelàn was one of thirty-four Latinx artists whose work was included in the Advocates of a Latino Museum of Cultural and Visual Arts & Archive Complex in Houston, Harris County’s (ALMAAHH) first mission driven and juried exhibition, Latinx Artists for ALMAAHH: We Are Houston. He was also one of five artists chosen for the inaugural 2023 ALMAAHH – MFAH Studio Artists. In addition, Castelànparticipated in Lawndale Art Center’s juried exhibition, The Big Show 2023 (Houston).   Castelàn has had solo exhibitions, including (Self)Fragmentation at Houston Community College Spring Branch Gallery in 2022, To Be Honest at Project Space Gallery (Houston) in 2019, and Drawn Superstition at the William R. Jenkins Architecture and Art Library (Houston) in 2017. His work has also been shown in select group shows in 2023, including the Art League Houston Instructor Exhibition at Art League Houston, Traces at Box13 Art Space (Houston), and If You Could Read My Mind at Clamplight Gallery (San Antonio). In June 2021, Castelàn was featured in Houston-based magazine, OutSmart’s “Latinx LGBTQ Artists Portray Their Struggles” and in August 2020, he was featured in VoyageHouston’s “SHOUTOUT HTX”."
