Charlie King: Executive Dysfunction(ing)

January 12 - February 10,2024

From Box 13 Artspace:

“Executive Dysfunction(ing)” is an installation that explores the intricate aspects of executive dysfunction. This is often associated with neurodiversity, mental illness, and the human experiences in today’s consumerist, fast-paced, society. Executive dysfunction heavily impacts decision-making, working memory, problem-solving, and goal setting.

Through installation of domestic objects and sculptural elements, this exhibition sheds light on the personal, societal, and universal implications of executive dysfunction. This installation encompasses an environment that mirrors the feelings of isolation, vulnerability, and shame that comes with executive dysfunction.

Throughout my artistic practice, I explore the often-stigmatized realm of depression and mental illness. My work serves as a sanctuary for the expression of deeply personal and often taboo emotions, offering solace to those who resonate with its themes. It is my intention to educate others on these emotional landscapes, helping others feel less isolated in their mental health journeys.

Charlie King is an MFA candidate at the University of Houston. He previously studied at Sam Houston State University for his BFA in photography. Charlie’s work pulls on personal themes in his life such as vulnerability, gender, identity, and mental illness. He spreads awareness about often stigmatized or under-represented issues and creates an open dialogue with the viewer. Charlie’s work has a heavy focus in the photography, but he also experiments with mixed media and installations techniques.
