Lorena Morales: Topographies of a Place to Know

"Hooks-Epstein Galleries proudly presents an exhibition of mixed media work by Venezuelan American artist, Lorena Morales.

Lorena Morales presents new works that belong to the series Topographies of a Place to Know, which she started in 2019 while living as an expat in Soyo, Angola. To better understand her surroundings and the context of her location, she searched for detailed city and area maps, to no avail. As a result of her frustration, Morales began creating her own maps, and the series was born. Topographies of a Place to Know is a series of imaginary, emotional, and psychological maps that relate to the perception of home and the persistence of memory; these concepts are an overarching theme throughout her current work. Morales continues her cogitation over identity and the evolving nature of home as memories, circumstances, spaces, and perceptions change.

Lorena Morales studied painting and sculpture at The Glassell School of Art in Houston, TX. She currently has a solo exhibition at Beeville Art Museum in Beeville, TX (January 20 – April 13, 2024). In 2023, Morales’s work was featured in a solo exhibition at Art Museum Texas in Sugar Land, TX. Also in 2023, Morales was in AMoA Biennial 600, ajuried exhibition at the Amarillo Museum of Art in Amarillo, TX. Her work is currently being shown in Hooks-Epstein Galleries’ Kaleidoscope, Celebrating Women in Art women’s group exhibition (March 2024). In August 2021, artwork by Morales was among 74 pieces chosen for the City of Houston’s Civic Art Collection featured in Houston’s airports. In October 2021, Morales was selected for a Drawing Research Residency at L’AIR Arts in Paris, France. She currently lives in Houston, TX."
