The Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin has launched an open call for its annual Mix ‘n’ Mash exhibition, which features hundreds of regional artists.
Since 2008, Mexic-Arte has hosted a yearly exhibition in which artists can pick up a free gessoboard, create a work of art on the panel, and return it to the museum for display. This year’s theme is Ecos del pasado/Echoes of the Past. Creative works in a variety of techniques and styles are welcomed.
The open call prompts artists to consider “your favorite childhood show, a special moment shared with a loved one, a dish, a specific smell, a trip, a place, a restaurant that does not exist anymore, or even a natural landscape. We encourage you to explore and express the unique ways nostalgia manifests in your own life or in the lives of those around you. What memories, moments, or feelings does nostalgia evoke for you?”
Interested artists can pick up a board from Mexic-Arte Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, from Noon to 5 p.m. Boards should be registered online via this form and returned to the museum by Wednesday, January 22, 2025. An opening reception will be held on Friday, January 31, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
