Veronica Ibargüengoitia: Beyond Understanding

From Dallas College: "Dallas College Galleries is excited to present Beyond Understanding, a solo exhibition by installation artist Veronica Ibargüengoitia. Beyond Understanding will take place in the Cliff Gallery at Mountain View campus, and will run from January 21, through February 28th. Gallery hours are from 10:00 – 4:00, Monday through Friday. Veronica Ibargüengoitia’s work explores human capacity for resilience and adaptation to conditions of displacement. The artist is interested in the transformation and reconstruction of one's identity in a new home and how that is influenced by landscape, language, belonging, culture, physical risks, and disorientation. Ibargüengoitia’s art practice is not just about questioning globalized immigration systems and the current human migration and refugee crises but about building spaces for understanding and empathy between the self and the other. Ibargüengoitia’s installations are spaces that question systems of migration and mental adaptation. The artist creates barriers that record human passage, and surfaces that suggest tactility to encourage conjunctive relationships between bodies. She uses nonprecious materials like cardboard, sand, and paper that recall memories of packing, discarding, and releasing and relate to the emotional stress and grief of moving. There will be a public reception at the Mountain View Campus Cliff Gallery on Thursday, January 30, from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m."
