Ashley Whitt: Good Girl Rotted

From Dallas College: "Dallas College Galleries is pleased to present Good Girl Rotted, a solo exhibition by multi-disciplinary artist Ashley Whitt. Good Girl Rotted will take place in the H. Paxton Moore Fine Arts Gallery at El Centro Campus, and will run from January 21, through February 28th. Gallery hours are from 10:00 – 4:00, Monday through Friday. Whitt draws inspiration by a book written by Barbara Creed, titled: The Monstrous-Feminine: Film, Feminism, and Psychoanalysis. While reading Creed’s book, the artist was struck by Creed’s theories about women and their portrayal as monstrous in horror films. The concept of the monstrous-feminine argued in the book, thus became the crux of the exhibition. The artist's perspectives are woven and twisted into an amalgamation of photography, video, sculptural installations, and handmade books. She makes work which reference fragmented body parts, floral wallpaper, dollhouses, and cakes. They include large-scale papier maché sculptures, soft fabric sculptures, and corresponding videos that visualize the interior thoughts and spaces of the mind. Dollhouses are decorated to look cake-like and framed photographic collages and handmade books made with a sewing machine, round out the exhibit. What does it feel like to be a woman living in the United States in 2025? The monster, no matter the gender, signifies the boundary between human and non-human. To Ashley Whitt, this is what it feels like to be a woman in 2025. She is the monster. Join the Dallas College Gallery Team in celebrating Ashley Whitt, and her powerful exhibition Good Girl Rotted.
