The DMA is the 4th stop of the first major survey of the Los Angeles–based Bradford, best known for his large-scale abstract paintings made from billboards, permanent-wave end papers, carbon paper, newsprint, and other vernacular materials. The show includes a new installation, Pinocchio Is on Fire, which examines key moments in the history of the black community in Los Angeles from the early 1980s to the present.
