Tanya Aguiñiga: AMBOS on the Road in Texas

"The 11th annual Booker-Lowe Lecture, organized by the Glassell Studio School, is a talk with artist Tanya Aguiñiga, whose work is on view in the exhibition Mending: Craft and Community, Selections from the Museum’s Collection." In 2016, Aguiñiga founded AMBOS: Art Made Between Opposite Sides, a project with the goal of humanizing border-crossing and bringing attention to the experiences of communities on the U.S.–Mexico border. Through collaborative work between artists and people along the border, the project asked more than 7,000 participants their thoughts about the border. The next step was documenting the landscape; the reactions and emotions; and the border-related art made in both nations. In this lecture, Aguiñiga shares AMBOS’s documentation and findings about the Texas–Mexico border, including cards collected as part of the Border Quipu project on how Texas’s neighbors feel about their relationship to the U.S. border.
