"Will Murchison’s intricate paintings are layered with collage that imbue formal abstraction with narrative meaning. The found images taken from mid-century lifestyle magazines are removed from their original context, cut into stylized shapes, and arranged into the artist’s tangled compositions. Fully assembled, these all-over paintings waiver between precarious organization and disintegration. Optimistic depictions of American progress and consumerism become absurd and sinister when placed within the abstract scaffolding. The process results in fragmented history paintings that use the optimistic imagery of the time period to reflect on the darker realities of 20th century America. References incorporated in Murchison’s titles and the works themselves are drawn from art and literature. Murchison is looking to contemporary artists including Julie Mehretu, Mark Bradford, Elliott Hundley, Mark Grotjan, Elizabeth Murray, and Mary Heilman. The titles of his paintings are often quotes originating from contemporary literature by authors including Deborah Eisenberg, Rachel Cusk, Marilynne Robinson, Denis Johnson, Ben Lerner, and George Saunders."
