In 1968, Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) began making wall drawings that challenged the status and process of creating a work of art. Ever since, his revolutionary works, drawn directly on the wall of various institutions as well as civic and private buildings around the world, have inspired artists, scholars, and visitors alike. To celebrate the gift of Wall Drawing #1115 by Sol LeWitt to Rice’s Public Art Collection, the Moody Center for the Arts, together with the Department of Art History at Rice University, is delighted to present a symposium that will highlight LeWitt’s unique contribution to Conceptual and Minimal art, as well as the function, and legacy of his wall drawings. The event will bring together renowned scholars, curators, and artists to engage in a critical discussion around LeWitt’s work. Program:
