Koelsch gallery is proud to present a whimsical exhibition of painting, sculpture, and assemblage titled daredevils, by houston-based artist steven sachs. daredevils draws predominately from historical references from the turn of the 20th century, people who put their lives on the line, some hoping for fame and fortune, others just trying to make a living, but underlying mostly just for the “thrill” of it. whether it was being strapped to a spinning wheel having knives thrown at you, jumping off a pier while riding a horse, going over niagara falls in a barrel, riding on the wings of a biplane, cliff diving, or walking on a tightrope, this exhibit focuses on the successes of these magnificent - but mostly unknown historical figures. sachs’ style also walks the tightrope between real and surreal, playful and serious, humorous and sad, personal and universal. these contradictions carry over to his selection of materials, taking the seemingly marginal, discarded and forgotten elements, whether it be rusted nails, crushed cans, or reclaimed wood, the old and discarded is transformed into contemporary art.
