February 22 - March 29,2020
In The Absence of Others – paintings, photographs, and works on paper focused on self-portraiture. The exhibition will be on view February 22nd through March 28th and will open with a reception for the artists on Saturday, February 22nd from 6:00-8:00 pm.
The art of self-expression has evolved over centuries with artists looking to themselves as the subject of the narrative; the lead in their own story. From the Early Renaissance to the Post-Modern and Contemporary, artists have been using self-portraiture in every major movement of art. Rembrandt, Frida Kahlo, Van Gogh, Picasso, Cindy Sherman, Richard Avedon, Diane Arbus, Andy Warhol – the list goes on of artists who have immortalized themselves through their art.
From a 1986 drawing by Nic Nicosia to a headless self-portrait painting by Francisco Moreno, In the Absence of Others brings together a group of artists with self-portrayal as the common thread.
