FLATBED REDUX

February 22 - March 21,2020

Flatbed Center for Contemporary Printmaking invites the public to the upcoming exhibition, FLATBED REDUX. Featuring twelve artists, Flatbed Redux celebrates the rich history of working with and representing stylistically diverse artists to create fine art prints. The experience of seeing these historic impressions in Flatbed’s new, beautifully lit gallery gives this exhibition its title, Flatbed Redux. Showing are rarely seen prints by Flatbed artists Miguel Aragon, John Cobb, Ann Conner, Jack Craft, Suzi Davidoff, David Everett, Denny McCoy, Sharon Kopriva, Linda Ridgway, Dan Rizzie, Darden Smith and Julie Speed. These artists, known as either painters or sculptors, use printmaking as part of their art practice and have worked at Flatbed Press’s studio with master printers to create original museum quality prints. The Flatbed Redux installation gives the public new insight into the stylistic depth of exhibited works. Contrasts of styles and printmaking techniques range from the traditional and complex etching by painter John Cobb to the deep, abstract aquatints of Denny McCoy. Techniques include the drill-cut oversized woodcuts of Miguel Aragon and Linda Ridgway’s use of directly printed objects with hand-coloring. Color contrasts can be seen in the brilliant color-study etchings of John Robert Craft to the chiaroscuro woodcuts of David Everett. Artists such as Julie Speed and Sharon Kopriva have used their substantial draftsmanship to create fantastical subjects, while Ann Conner carves and prints her Spirograph patterns. Suzi Davidoff’s painterly aquatint etchings take advantage of intaglio technique’s ability to layer with multiple plates, while Dan Rizzie directly paints his images to create monotypes. Scale of work ranges from Darden Smith’s small, intimate line etchings to Aragon’s and Conner’s oversized woodblock prints. 3701 DROSSETT DRIVE, AUSTIN, TEXAS 78744 WWW.FLATBEDPRESS.COM Opening reception to be held February 22 from 6 until 8 PM.
