Hillerbrand+Magsamen: Devices: Then and Now

The exhibition runs through March 29. Hillerbrand+Magsamen will have an artist talk and book signing on Saturday, March 21, at 1 pm. Devices: Then and Now is an interdisciplinary project rooted  in society’s ever-growing desire to exercise control over our lives through various devices.  Consisting of photography and sculpture, this exhibition presents the collaborative family team’s inventions and new functions for ordinary objects made from old toys, tin foil, insulation foam, packing blankets, recycled plastics, pins, and rhinestones. The show is an extension of their 2019 exhibition with Heidi Vaughan Fine Art, titled The Devices Project, as well as new pieces that are a continuation of the project. From a bedazzled Little Tykes car, to embroidered photographs to photographic blanket assemblages, Hillerbrand+Magsamen provide a mythological journey to explore what we do and don’t know, and ways to cope and connect in a tumultuous world through their devices. The artists have published a book that will be released in March, 2020. Entitled 147 Devices for Integrated Principles, the book features 147 photographs and documentation of the original experimental theater performance with writing by acclaimed playwright, Kirk Lynn, and Alison de Lima Greene, curator of Contemporary Art & Special Projects at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. It is available in softcover and in a limited-edition collector’s hardback edition that includes a custom pressed vinyl record of music by composer Peter Stopschinski. Hillerbrand+Magsamen will have a book signing event during their artist talk event on March 21. Mary Magsamen is the Curator at Aurora Picture Show. Stephan Hillerbrand is an Associate Professor at the University of Houston. At the core of their practice are the tenets of Fluxus, an ongoing movement connecting art and the everyday, that they engage as a form of “living art.” Their interdisciplinary work, which combines video,  photography, installation, and performance, centers on their physical home and daily lives, including the participation of their two children, Maddie and Emmett, in an attempt to address topics of family, communication, and consumerism.
