A solo exhibition featuring photography by Cissy Beasley. From the Beeville Art Museum: "The wildlife of South Texas in all its glory is the focus of Cissy Beasley’s upcoming photography exhibition at the Beeville Art Museum. Coast & Cactus: Photography by Cissy Beasley will be on view at the museum from September 12 through December 19, 2020. Born and raised in South Texas, Beasley, a seasoned hunter and trained skeet shooter, has spent a lifetime in the fields at and around her family ranch near Laredo. Her work features birds, deer, snakes, and other species in their natural habitat, capturing the diverse beauty of the land and the importance of conservation. “Through my photography,” Beasley says, “I seek to promote a greater awareness of the natural beauty of South Texas and its inhabitants, and the importance of the ecosystem that supports it.” Beasley has deep Beeville roots. Her ancestors were some of the earliest settlers in Bee County and her grandfather, John R. Beasley, was Beeville’s first mayor when the city was incorporated in 1908. An avid conservationist, he was the genesis of a family that has always been dedicated to the environment and all of the diversity it supports. An active member of the North American Nature Photography Association; Professional Photographers of America; Coastal Conservation Association; and Texas Wildlife Association, Cissy Beasley shares her experience with other photographers via workshops and social media. For her, sharing this knowledge acts as a tool for spreading the word about conservation and the encroaching threat to particular bird species. Among her honors and awards, Beasley was the first solo female competitor to take the top prize at the prestigious Wildlife in Focus Contest in 2019. Shooting well over 30,000 pictures over a period of five months (and entering her top 100), she won nine other first places in various categories, in addition to taking the top prize. She credits the win to her lifetime background as an outdoorswoman; knowing how to blend in with the environment; and countless hours searching for just the right shots. In recent years, she has experimented with photography by drones, allowing her to capture landscapes in a novel way. The Beeville Art Museum, created and operated by the Joe Barnhart Foundation, is first and foremost a teaching museum, providing cultural and educational opportunities for the citizens of Bee County and surrounding areas. Cited by Texas Monthly magazine as one of the “great small towns for art,” Beeville, with a population of approximately 13,000, is home to one of the most ambitious art and educational programs in Texas. In addition to exhibiting works by some of Texas’s most renowned artists, as well as selections from private collections and major museums across the state, the Beeville Art Museum provides docent-led tours and art classes for children and adults and workshops for Beeville educators at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston."
