Domesticated will launch on the gallery’s online platform ECG Viewing Room on Friday, August 7th, 2020. During the shelter in place orders, Nic Mathis found a way to find beauty in the ordinary things around him. Created with pigma ink and alcohol ink, Mathis' drawings of vegetables, flowers, and other botanicals have an immediacy and sincerity of the mark. A percentage of sales will be donated to The Magdalen House -- a place which holds a special place in Mathis' life. Magdalen House is a non-profit organization helping women achieve sobriety and sustain recovery from alcoholism at no cost and based on 12-Step spiritual principles. Founded in Dallas in 1987, The Magdalen House remains the only agency in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to offer comprehensive recovery services – without insurance or state funding – 100% free of charge. Nic Mathis' works will be available for viewing in the gallery by appointment. For the safety of the gallery’s staff and patrons, Erin Cluley Gallery will be open by appointment only until further notice at their location in the Dallas Design District at 150 Manufacturing Street, Suite 210. About the Artist Self-taught artist Nic Mathis has been drawing his entire life and is known to always carry a sketchbook. In his adolescent years, he found his way through graffiti and street art. Immersed in skateboard and street culture, Mathis’ process was influenced by the multi-layered surfaces of his surroundings. His most recent paintings, based on drawings he made for his two daughters, display colorful, monster-like imaginary characters as subjects. Nic Mathis was born in Dallas, Texas in 1979. He worked as a licensed electrician and design fabricator for Paul Rudolph’s lighting concept in New York. After moving back to Dallas, Mathis was a co-founding member of the collaboration focused art collective, Artbeef, and its accompanying project space, Beefhaus (which has since concluded programming). His first solo exhibition was in 2013 at Eyeheart Gallery in New York City, and he has shown with Erin Cluley Gallery in Dallas since 2016. He has also participated in artist-led education and outreach events hosted by the Nasher Sculpture Center, and his work has been featured in publications such as Glasstire and the Dallas Morning News. Mathis currently lives and works in Dallas, Texas."
