August 08 - September 05,2020
A group show organized by Rockport Center for the Arts. From the Rockport Center for the Arts:
"Continuing a long-standing tradition now in its 36th year, Rockport Center for the Arts will host Standing Out 2020, Aug. 8–Sept. 5, a merit show featuring the work of six member artists from the Coastal Bend.
“The merit show is one of my favorites because it really honors the diversity of talent among our member artists,” says Elena Rodriguez, curator of exhibitions for Rockport Center for the Arts. “It’s a chance for these six artists to really shine by presenting a body of their work.”
Five of this year’s merit artists — Janice Bartke Thompson, Jayne Duryea, David Hill, Flint Reed and Catherine Vrba — were selected during last year’s Currents Exhibition, the annual all-members exhibit, by juror Dr. Laura Petican, Associate Professor of Art History at TAMUCC and Director of the Islander Art Gallery. The sixth artist, Crystal Farris, was selected by exhibition attendees’ popular vote, as is tradition.
Standing Out 2020 artwork will be viewable and for sale both in person and online at rockportartcenter.com. The event, which is free and open to the public, will kick off Saturday, Aug. 8, with a reception from 4–6 p.m., with a maximum of 70 attendees admitted. All attendees, including visitors, staff, and volunteers, are required to wear face masks and maintain social distancing while in the gallery.
“Since 1985, Standing Out has been a staple in the Rockport arts community and we are so pleased to be able to continue this tradition,” said Luis Purón, executive director for Rockport Center for the Arts. “We are happy to bring artwork to Rockport locals and visitors in a safe and healthy environment. During Hurricane Harvey, ‘Art Heals’ became our motto to get us through tough times, and I think that is true today during the COVID pandemic.”"
