Carmen Herrera: Structuring Surfaces

A solo exhibition featuring work by Carmen Herrera. From the MFAH: "Carmen Herrera: Structuring Surfaces is the Museum’s first exhibition devoted exclusively to the work of the internationally celebrated Cuban-American artist, Carmen Herrera. At 105, she has built a prolific career spanning nine decades, dedicated to expanding the boundaries of geometric abstraction. Beginning in the late 1960s, Herrera began to push her austere, hard-edge experiments into three dimensions. The linearity of these works required a physical presence, resulting in the genesis of a body of work she calls Estructuras (structures). Drawing from private collections, the Museum, and Lisson Gallery, Carmen Herrera: Structuring Surfaces reveals her elaborate artistic process through more than 30 works from the 1960s to the present, including paintings, drawings, prints, wall structures, and objects. The MFAH exhibition compliments Carmen Herrera: Estructuras Monumentales, a major public art installation of large-scale sculptural works by Herrera presented by Buffalo Bayou Partnership, on view beginning October 22 along the Buffalo Bayou in central Houston.
