Fall 2020 International Artist-In-Residence Virtual Welcome Potluck

October 01 - October 01,2020

A welcome event for the fall 2020 artist residency season at Artpace.
From Artpace:
"Artpace San Antonio is pleased to announce the Fall 2020 International Artist-in-Residence program featuring Guest Curator, Lauren Cross, PhD. For 25 years, Artpace has been a laboratory for creative expression. The residency program provides artists from around the world with the environment and resources to encourage experimentation and growth. As Artpace navigates the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting shutdown, we continue to pursue our mission of supporting artists in the creation of new art and bringing global art practices and experiences to San Antonio.
Dr. Lauren Cross is an artist, curator, and scholar. Her research topics include critical theory, social practice, multiculturalism, and women's and gender studies, and she is currently the Program Coordinator & Assistant Professor of the Interdisciplinary Art and Design Studies (IADS) program at the University of North Texas. Dr. Cross is also the founder of WoCA Projects, a nonprofit that focuses on diversifying the contemporary landscape through exhibitions and community arts programming.
Dr. Cross selected fall resident artists Letitia Huckaby, Elana Mann, and Alisa Yang via virtual studio visits. Dr. Cross is especially thrilled to work with selected artists whose work she believes “reflect the politics of the current moment and who are willing to challenge us in important ways." Letitia Huckaby explores faith and legacy through her family history and African American heritage. Elana Mann creates artwork that brings a greater consciousness to the listening and speaking we practice in everyday life.  Alisa Yang is an interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker with a research-based practice exploring language, cultural identity, and intergenerational trauma of Asian diasporas.
The artists begin their residency on Monday, September 28 and will adhere to all of the Artpace COVID-19 safety guidelines in place. The fall 2020 residency will include virtual events, either in addition to or in place of our in-person programming depending on the state of the pandemic, allowing audiences to engage with the artists during their residency. Artpace recently acquired the technology to create interactive virtual galleries, allowing for access to the Artpace exhibitions internationally and online.
While COVID-19 has changed day-to-day operations at Artpace, it has also provided the team with the opportunity to be more innovative with programming and expand its digital outreach. As organizations across the globe are cutting back on programming and staff, Artpace is grateful to be able to continue supporting the creation of new art through our International Artist-in-Residence program."
