Mary Jenewein: On a Hard Journey Home, I Came Upon Some Cheer

May 01 - August 03,2021

From the gallery: "Redbud Gallery is proud to announce the latest work of Houston's iconic artist, Mary Jenewein, in her exhibition On a Hard Journey Home, I Came Upon Some Cheer.  This collection consists of rarely seen work of this master.  Redbud owner, Gus Kopriva, adds, "I have known her for over 30 years and her work has flourished during this time.  The viewer is in for an exciting sensory experience."  On view from May 1 through August 3, 2021 at Redbud's west gallery. Artist Statement: Through these years of making art (paintings, sculptures, collages, and any other medium I could try), I have made boxes.  The box gave me the form to hold my content. It is small, confined, claustrophobic. The screens are another layer of imprisonment, but they attempt to invite you inside. My mother quoted Clifford Odets to me, “We are living in a time when new art should shoot bullets.”  My boxes are of such a time, our time.  They are what I see, read, and hear: child labor, torture, tyranny, oppression of women, and much more.  I don’t have enough time to make all the boxes. Every artist has something stuck in her craw.  She coughs and coughs and sometimes it comes out."
