Earthbound: Work by Benjamin McVey

May 14 - June 13,2021

"Benjamin McVey’s solo show Earthbound will be hosted in RCA’s Galería Dos, featuring a collection of ceramic works influenced by both natural surfaces and domestic interior patterns.

”The natural surfaces are inspired by what I see in the outdoors from hikes and walks that I frequently go on, and saturated colors that I see in our skies and earth,” McVey said. “The domestic interior patterns are a body of work I call ‘Domestic Artifacts’ that speak to how we curate our lives through swatch books, catalogues, and showrooms like Ikea. I think of both bodies of work not only as trompe-l'oeil style swatch samples, but also as archeological artifacts, much like fragments of past civilizations or periods you see in a museum.”

Receiving his BFA from Texas State University and his MFA from The University of Texas at San Antonio, the Houston native currently lives in San Antonio where he maintains a vigorous studio practice, also teaching and lecturing for the Austin Community College System. McVey studied painting and drawing in New York City at the Art Students League and National Academy of Design and has taught painting, drawing, and sculpture at The University of Texas at San Antonio. McVey has exhibited in Florida, Kentucky, New York, and Texas, with numerous works in private collections both nationally and internationally (New York, California, Texas, Denmark, and the UK), as well as public collections throughout Texas.
