John Miranda: Movidas: New Work

May 21 - June 26,2021

From Cluley Projects: "Cluley Projects, the new satellite project space of Erin Cluley Gallery, is pleased to announce the second exhibition of its inaugural season featuring Fort Worth based artist, John Miranda. The exhibition will be on view May 21st through June 19th at its location in West Dallas at 2123 Sylvan Avenue. An Opening Reception will be hosted for the artist Friday May 21st, 5:00-8:00pm. In JOHN MIRANDA’s exhibition Movidas: New Work, symbols are used to explore cultural identity and memory by recreating found objects from the artist’s childhood. He describes his work as a “mapping” of environments based on his Mexican American heritage by presenting the desert landscape of Del Rio, Texas where he spent his childhood with a sharp contrast to his life in the metropolis of Dallas as a young adult. Miranda’s work invokes a Chicano sensibility and an attitude of Rasquachismo– an underdog perspective rooted in resourcefulness and adaptability, yet mindful of stance and style. He is influenced by paño art and Lowrider Arte, Latinx styles that consists of equally spaced, never overlapping images to give each image the same level of importance. He uses encaustic as a material because he relates its resilience to life by saying “even if you break it, it can still come back together.” Movidas: New Work will feature new paintings, encaustic on paper works, and sculpture. About the Artist John Miranda (born 1979, Del Rio, TX) received his BFA from University of Texas at Arlington. Miranda is of Mexican American heritage and weaves stories of rural versus urban life throughout his work, referencing the contrasts in his social and bicultural upbringing. Strongly influenced by his five sisters who raised him during his formative years, the figure and identity are often intertwined. His layering of shapes creates an ephemeral quality, subtle sexual innuendo, and a sense of impermanence– here today and gone tomorrow.

About Erin Cluley Gallery and Cluley Projects Erin Cluley Gallery opened its doors in West Dallas in 2014, igniting a creative movement and acting as a hub for visual arts and community engagement. After nearly five years on Fabrication Street, the gallery moved its main operation to Riverbend – a development in Dallas’ Design District celebrating the intersection between culture and commerce. The new satellite gallery Cluley Projects opened in April 2021 and is housed in an 1100 sq ft space on Sylvan Avenue within walking distance from the Belmont Hotel. Cluley Projects will act as an incubator space focusing on regional artists and providing a platform for discovery and mentorship."
