Artist Statement

Dealing with overall concepts revolving around consumerism, Andrew Lawson’s exhibition A Present Dystopia illustrates a narrative that covers the discourses of modern consumer trends. As our existence extends deeper into the post-humanist age, our value system changes and trends in 'popular consumerism' fade. Our relationship between the virtual and the real begin to dismiss the importance of material and highlight our consumption of information in an age of disinformation. Lawson’s work illustrates the remediation of the relationship between consumer and technology in our society and helps show how future value systems are developed. His traditional and digital printmaking processes highlight these stories as intense studies. This exhibition will also open an unwritten chapter of crypto consumerism (as in ‘NFT’) as a testing ground. There is a play with the dichotomy of whimsicality and the dark nature of the overall themes of the work as Lawson hopes to engage the viewer and creates questions about their own role in our image-based, late capitalist society.

The exhibition of a graduating project represents the culmination of a candidate's studies, and is presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts in Art at Texas Tech University
