Paulo Nimer Pjota: Every Empire Breaks Like a Vase

From the Power Station: "Paulo Nimer Pjota (b. 1988) is an artist living and working in São Paulo, Brazil. Within his works, history and mythology of ancient culture is conflated with contemporary and urban street aesthetics. Objects and references from Ancient Egypt, Flemish still-life, and Greek mythology are composed on painterly, monochromatic backgrounds combined with symbols from popular culture found throughout the streets of Brazil. Cast sculptures reflect the art of antiquity and exotic fruits from street markets are paired with his painted imagery. Pjota’s highly orchestrated allegorical compositions are an observation of the realism of his time and address conflict brought on by political and economic disparity, the struggle to maintain power, and reflect his personal biography.
