Korean Film Days 2021


December 10 - December 12,2021

The Korean Film Days festival returns in person with recent arthouse and genre movies from the country’s robust film industry.  Selections include an Oscar-winner, the latest from prolific filmmaker Hong Sang-soo, and Korea’s Academy Award submission for Best International Feature. All films in Korean with English subtitles unless otherwise noted.

Consul General’s Choice

Welcoming remarks by Hon. Ahn Myung-Soo

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung (USA, 2020, 115 min., in English and Korean with English subtitles)

Heartwarming and critically-acclaimed, Minari follows a Korean-American family who moves to an Arkansas farm in search of their own American Dream. Yuh-Jung Youn earned an Academy Award for her role as the loving, very opinionated grandmother.

Directed by Hong Sang-soo (South Korea, 2021, 66 min.)

The director’s 25th feature is set in Korea and Berlin. An aspiring actor has a series of encounters that reveal surprising discoveries about his girlfriend and his parents. Winner of the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the 2021 Berlin International Film Festival.

Directed by Hong Seong-eun (South Korea, 2021, 91 min.)

After her neighbor dies alone in his apartment, a solitary young woman living an isolated urban lifestyle reevaluates her life, Hong Seong-eun's debut feature has earned critical praise and acting awards for Gong Seung-Yeon.

SEOBOK

Saturday, December 11, 7:00 p.m.

Directed by Lee Yong-ju (South Korea, 2021, 114 min.)

A sci-fi action thriller with a metaphysical theme follows a former intelligence agent (Gong Yoo from Train to Busan and Squid Game), tasked with safely transporting a human clone (Park Bo-Gum) who holds the secret of eternal life.

ESCAPE FROM MOGADISHU (Mogadisyu)

Sunday, December 12, 2:00 p.m.

Directed by Seung-wan Ryoo (South Korea, 2021, 121 min.)

Korea’s 2022 Oscar submission for Best International Feature is based on a dramatic true story. As civil war rages in Somalia, rival North and South Korean diplomats are left trapped, and realize that their best chance for escape involves working together on a plan to get out.

SPIRITWALKER

Sunday, December 12, 5:00 p.m.

Directed by Yoon Jae-keun (South Korea, 2020, 108 min.)

An amnesiac discovers that his spirit changes bodies every twelve hours, and that he has the skills of an intelligence operative. This existential thriller considers themes including surveillance, corruption and betrayal, and won the “Excellence in Action Cinema” award at the 2021 New York Asian Film Festival.
