Vincent Falsetta: In Dynamic Duality

April 02 - May 07,2022

From Anya Tish Gallery: "Anya Tish Gallery is pleased to announce the return of the highly acclaimed Texas-based artist, Vincent Falsetta, for his second solo exhibition with the gallery. In Dynamic Duality the artist continues his investigation of abstract gesture, process, and expression through layers of textured striations of color and underlying movement. For the first time in Houston, in addition to the artist’s iconic oil paintings, the exhibition will feature carefully calculated, multi-hued text drawings, which give the viewer a glimpse into the artist’s stream of thought and his daily activities. Resembling a diary, the handwritten pen and ink text, referencing comic book speech bubbles, is a record of the artist’s daily activities, from the mundane to the exceptional. The meticulous watercolor rendering around the text provides an atmospheric context, allowing the speech bubbles to seemingly float on the surface. Unlike the inner-monologue drawings, the mercurial paintings reveal themselves as the artist creates them – at times surprising or confounding his expectations. Falsetta elegantly weaves color into each chromatically dynamic piece using idiosyncratic techniques, making the work feel painterly and, at the same time, meticulously rendered, equally object and illusion, deliberately planned and spontaneously improvised. The shattered movement of chromatic, pulsating shapes compels the viewer’s gaze to discover all the varying elements and dynamic textures. Using various hand pressures, rhythms and speeds, the artist brushes, blends, and pulls the paint across the canvas creating movement on a two-dimensional surface. Falsetta’s impressive labor-intensive works have a visual impact that forces the viewer to spend time discovering their minuscule intricacies. Painterly and textural, Falsetta’s works demand to be studied in order to grasp their underlying energy and distinct sophistication. Vincent Falsetta, born in 1949 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, earned an MFA in Painting/Drawing from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia and Rome, Italy in 1974. Falsetta is a Professor Emeritus of the University of North Texas, where he taught since 1977. Since 1972 Falsetta’s work has been featured in over 52 solo and 350 curated or juried group exhibitions, including: The Texas Biennial 2013, Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum, San Antonio; Full Spectrum: Prints from the Brandywine Collection, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pennsylvania. He is the recipient of several grants including an NEA Fellowship Award in 1996, and his work is included in many public and private collections, such as: the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, El Paso Museum of Art, Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and Galleria Cavallino, Venice, Italy."
