Sarah Fox: Bad Bunny Gets Lucky

"Cluley Projects, the satellite project space of Erin Cluley Gallery, is pleased to mark the anniversary of its first full year in West Dallas featuring San Antonio based artist Sarah Fox. The solo show will be on view April 30th thru May 28th at its location in West Dallas at 2123 Sylvan Avenue. An Opening Reception will be hosted for the artist Wednesday April 30thh from 5-8 pm.
In her solo exhibition, Bad Bunny Gets Lucky, Sarah Fox satirizes traditional dynamics of power and creates vibrant escapes using performance, drawings, and tactile objects. The artist filmed a puppet show titled Bad Bunny Gets Lucky, a direct response to the abortion restriction legislation passed in Texas last year. The puppet show scene shows a character of acute loneliness that somehow still manages to have a good time.
Fox describes the character saying, “She is a dark and broken character, but ultimately a true survivor, brave, gutsy and hardworking.”
In the Bad Bunny series, the artist’s drawings reference 90’s animations such as Ren and Stimpy and R. Crumb’s Fritz the Cat. Their crude, hyperreal color and surrealist manner poke fun at more serious topics of the female condition. Fox injects herself as the main subject in animal form to layer personal experience, Western art references, and subversive themes.
The artist states, “There is something powerful about externalizing and characterizing some of the worst parts of yourself, and the people you grew up with, then still finding a way to love them.”
Fox’s first Dallas solo exhibition follows the McNay Art Museum’s request to modify the film Bad Bunny Gets Lucky which was to be included in a group exhibition at the museum in March 2022. The artist and educator chose to not to capitulate and five of the eight artists agreed, leaving the McNay in solidarity. The fellow artists celebrated their artistic freedom with a show at Blue Star Arts Complex on April 1st instead.
About the Artist
Sarah Fox’s multi-media narratives and characters are created from embodied female experience. Stories of life, loss, sex and love are told through corporeal hybrid creatures. The resulting collages, cyanotypes, and animations suggest a childlike fairytale but with an undercurrent of dark symbolism.
Her work has been shown throughout Texas, as well as in the Kinsey Institute (Bloomington, Indiana), Field Projects Gallery (New York, New York), Espacio Dörffi (Lanzarote, Canary Islands), Bedsetter Art Fair (Vienna, Austria), Casa Lu (Mexico City), and Darmstädter Sezession, (Darmstadt, Germany). In 2019 she was a recipient of a Sustainable Arts Foundation grant that allowed her to live and work at the Women’s Studio Workshop in NY with her son. She received an Individual Artist Grant from the City of San Antonio in 2021.
Fox lives and works in San Antonio, Texas with her 4-year-old son and is a resident artist at Clamp Light Studios and Gallery. She teaches at the Southwest School of Art and Texas State University.

Erin Cluley Gallery’s new satellite gallery Cluley Projects opened in April 2021 and is housed in an 1100 sq ft space on Sylvan Avenue within walking distance from the Belmont Hotel. Cluley Projects will act as an incubator space focusing on regional artists and providing a platform for discovery and mentorship.
