"Beeville Museum will bring selected paintings and sculpture by abstract artist Michael Kennaugh September 17 – December 17, 2022. This exhibit is curated in partnership with Moody Gallery. An artist’s reception, free to the public, is scheduled for Saturday, September 17, from noon to 2:00 p.m.
The exhibit will feature a wide selection of Kennaugh’s work including recent pieces reflecting his response to the pandemic. Visitors will encounter his well-known exploration of color as well as a darker palette that allowed him to discover how color and space might develop. "Attention to silhouette, shifting forms and color, and the visual evidence of previous passages below the skims of paint layers, are visual elements that best relay my desire to show the passage of time and the development of the picture,” commented the artist.
Michael Kennaugh (b. Casper, Wyoming, 1964) has spent most of his life in Texas and currently lives and works in Houston. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Lamar University, Beaumont (1986) and a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of North Texas, Denton (1990). He also attended The American College of Switzerland in Leysin (1990) and was awarded an artist residency (1996) at the William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center, Montauk, Long Island. His work is part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Beaumont; Houston Airport System, City of Houston; Lamar University, Beaumont; Tyler Museum of Art, Tyler; Mobile Museum of Art, Mobile, as well as private and corporate collections both national and international.
“Michael’s work has such a lyrical, spontaneous quality about it,” noted Executive Director Tracy Saucier, “but there is so much more to see within the layers of paint. Visitors can expect something fresh and different.”
The Beeville Art Museum, created and operated by the Joe Barnhart Foundation, is first and foremost a teaching museum, providing cultural and educational opportunities for the citizens of Bee County and surrounding areas. Cited by Texas Monthly magazine as one of the “great small towns for art,” Beeville, with a population of approximately 13,000, is home to one of the most ambitious art and educational programs in Texas. In addition to exhibiting works by some of Texas’s most renowned artists, as well as selections from private collections and major museums across the state, the Beeville Art Museum provides docent-led tours and art classes for children and adults and workshops for Beeville educators at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
