Edward Lane McCartney: Jewel Box, A Case for Personal Adornment

October 22 - November 19,2022

From Hooks-Epstein Galleries: "Hooks-Epstein Galleries presents Edward Lane McCartney’s Jewel Box, A Case for Personal Adornment, an exhibition of wearable art and jewelry. During the pandemic, artist Edward Lane McCartney remained busy crafting, repairing, and refashioning old jewelry that was brought to him by clients. Frequently fixing up various jewelry items, McCartney participated in what was to become an unanticipated trend throughout this time; he began ruminating over the source of the pieces and what the transformation of each piece into something new would mean to its recipient. In due course, McCartney began his own sentimental journey, creating his very own jewelry box and delineating and reserving pieces for himself from his personal stash. Surveying through decades worth of stones and various materials inspired McCartney with ideas and techniques that he wanted to revisit, thereby sparking the inspiration for each of the series in Jewel Box, A Case for Personal Adornment. The work in this exhibition speaks to an individual’s sense of personal adornment and identity. It is meant to spark joy and contemplation and be worn and enjoyed. Perusing the gallery as a large jewel box, the viewer will gain insight into McCartney’s prodigious creative process and output. Edward Lane McCartney resides in Houston, TX, where he remains active in the local arts community. In the Spring of 2022, McCartney participated in HCCC’s Sawed, Soldered, Constructed: The Work of the Houston Metal Arts Guild, a juried member exhibition. In 2019, McCartney’s work was included in the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH) group exhibition, Seeing Ourselves: Visual and Verbal Self-Portraits and Selfies. Also in 2019, he had a solo exhibition, Case Studies, at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC). Recently this year, McCartney conducted a Studio Tour and Lecture for The Smithsonian’s James Renwick Alliance (Houston, TX) and served as Assistant Teacher for Advanced Jewelry at The Glassell School of Art (MFAH). He has studied at the Glassell School of Art and served as the Board President of HCCC, where he was a former participant in the Artist in Residence Program."
