The Virtues of Rebellion

October 20 - November 21,2022

From McClain Gallery: "McClain Gallery is thrilled to announce the inclusion of early works by Dorothy Hood and Salle Werner Vaughn in The Virtues of Rebellion, a group exhibition with Phillips X which explores the creative output of women Surrealists from the mid-20th century and the artists working today that continue this rich legacy. Together, Hood and Vaughn represent two driving forces behind Texas' movement in abstraction, modernism, and surrealism. Though a generation apart, Hood and Vaughn share the pursuit of an internal world far from their rural East Texas roots. They traveled extensively, nourishing their creative impulses by seeking out different cultures and communities worldwide. Both eventually settled in Houston. Hood set up her studio in the early 60s and Vaughn in the 70s when the Houston artist community had few established female artists. Their dedication and exacting adherence to principles resulted in two of the most compelling bodies of work to emerge from Texas."
