Kim Kei: Splintered Breath Between the Teeth

January 14 - February 25,2023

From Flatbed:

"Flatbed is excited to present the innovative prints of Kim Kei in a solo exhibition at the Flatbed Center of Contemporary Printmaking gallery from January 14 until February 25, 2023.

Kim Kei (b.1981, Corpus Christi, TX) is a multi-disciplinary Los Angeles-based artist whose practice spans sculpture, printmaking, painting, and photography to evoke sensations of vulnerability, invasiveness, and tenderness towards the body. Kei received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2003. Her work has been exhibited internationally and she has had solo shows at Local Language (Oakland, CA), the Irvine Fine Arts Center (Irvine, CA), Brandstater Gallery (Riverside, CA), Alter Space (San Francisco), and Bustamante Gill (Los Angeles). Kei has attended residencies at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, Flatbed Press, Instinct, Singapore, Mass MoCa, Irvine Fine Arts Center, and La Sierra University and her work has been featured in Juxtapoz, Artsy OC Weekly, and Temporary Art Review.

During Kei’s residency at Flatbed in 2020, she experimented with large-scale monotypes.  In her deeply layered and complex abstract work, she draws on interrelated biological and geological forms that are embedded in every scale of existence. Kei states:  “Accumulations and repetitions of the small become ever-expanding, self-similar fractals. Our neurons and lungs take the shape of roots and rivers. This visceral indicator centers us on the condition of being a body inseparable from a whole Earth system.”

Featured in Kei’s exhibition will be a recent installation and her recent body of work which fuses painting and printmaking practices. Through collagraphic and monotype printing, Kei creates textures in low-relief sculptural surfaces. This process allows her to use “membranes” that she layers with ink and then runs through the press on multiple passes to create rhythms and refractions of light in her work.

The public is invited to a reception for Kei on Saturday, January 14 from 6 pm until 8 pm at Flatbed Center for Contemporary Printmaking. "
