BEYOND REALITY

March 22 - October 15,2023

From the McNay Art Museum: "San Antonio is home to a thriving arts community, from vibrant public art and murals to art galleries and museums. The McNay is committed to highlighting the talent in our community and the Texas region. Beyond Reality features artwork by four Texas-based artists, Carlos Donjuan, Angela Fox, Ernesto Ibañez, and Dan Lam, whose work features imagined realities. Carlos Donjuan discovered his passion for art through cartoons, comic books, and graffiti art. These early influences remain evident in his art practice to this day, through imaginative creatures, masked figures, and vivid murals. Angela Fox finds inspiration from myriad sources, including animation, quilting, and illuminated manuscripts. Her artwork focuses on the discovery of the self through a hero-warrior archetype, often featuring mighty, confident women in fantastical environments. Ernesto Ibañez transforms ordinary materials, like carpentry nails, into detailed sculptures of animal-like forms. While some of Ibañez’s sculptures resemble real-life animals, others are enchanting animal hybrids or monsters. Dan Lam manipulates foam and resin to create otherworldly sculptures inspired by nature and the human body. Vividly colorful and alluringly tactile, Lam’s sculptures are reminiscent of enticing, candy-colored desserts and mysterious, toxic sea creatures.
Beyond Reality is organized for the McNay Art Museum by Lauren Thompson, Assistant Curator; and Liz Paris, Collections Manager. Funding is most generously provided by the Elizabeth Huth Coates Charitable Foundation of 1992."
