A Dream in the Shadow of Something Real: Women in Art

July 14 - September 03,2023

From the El Paso Museum of Art:

"Inspired by There Is a Woman in Every Color: Black Women in Art, this exhibition explores the legacy of women and female-identifying individuals of Latin/Hispanic descent in the visual arts. Bringing together works from the permanent collection, the exhibition surveys female representation in artworks created by women and men. Intentionally left as blank, the exhibition text speaks to how there is no specific set label, as there are a variety of words used to describe and self-identify within the identities tied to the Latin American diaspora. This modest selection from EPMA’s collection offers a glimpse into the lived experiences and challenges faced by women living in the border region and other areas of the United States and Mexico.

This exhibition is a continuation of There is a Woman in Every Color: Black Women in Art, organized by the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, on view in the Woody and Gayle Hunt Family Gallery until May 14, 2023.

Support for this exhibition is provided by the Mellon Foundation, the Texas Commission on the Arts, the El Paso Museum of Art Foundation, and the City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department.
