MARY MARGARET HANSEN: ECHOME

May 13 - June 17,2023

From Heidi Vaughan Fine Art: "HEIDI VAUGHAN FINE ART is proud to present Echome, an exhibition of photo collages by Mary Margaret Hansen. The show opens at 11 am on Saturday, May 13, 2023, with a reception and party from 5 pm to 8pm at the gallery, located at 3510 Lake Street at Colquitt in Gallery Row in the Upper Kirby District. The exhibition runs through June 17, 2023. An artist talk will take place on Saturday, June 3, at 1 pm. Echome is an amalgamation of images that have enchanted the artist for decades: Neolithic stone circles and mounds, vine covered buildings, mussel and oyster shells, women's portraits, open doorways, faded flowers, overripe fruit, and beach pebbles. Echome was assembled with prints made from vintage glass negatives and Kodak PlusX and TriX film as well as digital images captured with an iPhone. All but two of the collages are printed on metal. Almost all the work for the exhibition began with remnants and imperfect fragments - darkroom test strips, fogged Kodak paper, black and white prints colored with Marshall's Oils, water damaged photos and bits of handwritten text - all echo nostalgia, suggest circular time, and may even declare an alternate reality. Mary Margaret Hansen has been a photographer and writer since she was nine years old. She has held a camera lens over her left eye, and her fingers on a keyboard, telling stories with both images and prose. Her series Finding Our Way, a post-feminist project created with her friend, fellow photographer Patsy Cravens, has been exhibited at FotoFest in Houston and The MAC in Dallas. Four works from this series are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Hansen has shown work in solo and group exhibitions, produced site-specific installations in Houston and Marfa, and served as lead artist for a City of Houston public art project. Her passions are printing photographs from negatives, assembling photo collages, and crafting personal essays with a memoir in mind. Not a day goes by that she does not look for connections between and among images and words.   HEIDI VAUGHAN FINE ART represents Houston artists. HVFA artists live in Houston but come from all over the globe and reflect the diversity of the city. The gallery presents, embraces, and celebrates diversity with projects that support local creative communities and ideas. HVFA also represents important Houston art collectors and sells secondary market art. A significant part of the gallery’s business is devoted to the valuation and appraisal of works of fine art for insurance purposes, estate planning, and charitable donations. HVFA is a member of the International Society of Appraisers, the Houston Art Gallery Association, Houston’s Gallery Row in the Upper Kirby District, and the Houston Arts Foundation. The gallery accepts Art Money. More information can be found at www.heidivaughanfineart.com and at HVFA’s online gallery on Artsy. Follow HVFA on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
