Magdalena Rantica: Domestic Landscape

May 20 - June 17,2023

From Erin Cluley Gallery:
"ERIN CLULEY GALLERY is pleased to announce Domestic Landscape – a solo exhibition by Oaxaca-based artist Magdalena Rantica. The exhibition will be on view May 20th through June 17th, 2023, at the gallery’s main location, 150 Manufacturing Street, Suite 210. An opening reception will be held Saturday, May 20th from 4 – 7 PM. The gallery is open weekly Wednesday through Saturday, 12 – 5 PM and by appointment.

Domestic Landscape—the first solo exhibition in the US to feature the work of South American painter Magdalena Rantica—showcases the artist’s vibrant approach to landscape painting and still lifes. Rantica’s striking depictions of birds, foliage and Ikebana floral arrangements recall the aesthetics of Chinese ink wash and color field painting. The artist’s evocative use of color creates a dreamy and mystical atmosphere around her environments. The subject matter of her work depicts natural scenes interrupted by the presence of humans; runny brushstrokes and geometric shapes punctuate the influence of man-made domesticity, industry, and design.
Magdalena Rantica’s exhibition at Erin Cluley Gallery brings together her large-scale canvas paintings as well as more intimate work on recycled paper. Reusing the back of printing proofs, her works on paper reinvigorate materials marked previously for disposal. Rantica’s compact still lifes of flowers and birds within abstract arrangements prompt viewers to consider their relationship to the natural and altered state of things around them.
Domestic Landscape will be Magdalena Rantica’s first solo exhibition with Erin Cluley Gallery. Rantica’s exhibition will be on display concurrently with Gary Goldberg’s Continental Drift at the gallery’s main location.
