Laura Spector: Personal Stories

August 18 - September 29,2023

From the Georgetown Art Center: "Personal Stories explores themes of the passage of time, grief, loss, technology, and transformation. Spector is influenced by turn-of-the-19th-century French poster advertisements that often told seductive visual stories to convey upcoming art exhibitions, theatrical performances, and products. Her imagery retains a similar format but aims to hide the artist's experiences in plain sight. The artwork reveals the artist's internal monologue and is inspired by a mixture of what is dreamt up while swimming laps, sitting in therapy, petting cats, and random words written on pieces of paper strewn throughout her home. Spector wonders how she can (metaphorically) turn herself inside-out, peel off her layers, drown, set fire to herself, or explode into bits to find a kernel of understanding as to what her life means in the context of the world we share. Loud and noisy chatter crescendo into the basis for how she starts a painting. When she can no longer tolerate her own thoughts of figuring out the puzzle of control, she paints."
