"Sonya Kelliher-Combs (b.1969) is a Native American artist based in Alaska that creates work using materials traditional to her Athabascan and Iñupiaq identities mixed with synthetic materials such as plastic and automotive paint. The synthetic and the organic take turns with mimicry through out Kelliher-Combs’ practice. Landscape and tradition find ways of thriving even in the midst of their attempted erasure, and her work is proof of that endurance. In possible refrain with artists like Eva Hesse and Magdalena Abakanowicz, Kelliher-Combs yields purity of form from unspeakable violence. "
